As a destination for Gap Year travellers Europe is so often over looked. Whilst inter-railing around Europe has been popular for decades, the opening up of Eastern Europe has provided endless opportunities to explore. We would urge travellers to head east to Poland, Romania, the Ukraine and beyond. Distances can be immence and transport often antiquated but highly rewarding. We do get feed back about scams in The Czech Republic, especailly on the Prague metro and corruption amongst officials is common in many areas of Eastern Europe.
Last May I went walking in Romania, on arrival at Bucharest OTP airport we met a con artist within 5 minutes! Jamie & I arrived late, about 2300, not ideal but last flight of the day out off Heathrow. We had booked rooms in local hotel, 5 mins walk from the terminal building and were about to set off when we were approached by a man offering a bus service. He claimed it was complimentary service from hotel. We were suspicious so checked with the Information Desk, our concern was proved right.
So a useful reminder to be on ones guard at ariport & seek advice at Information Desk, who were very helpful. The rest of our trip to Transylvania was wonderful, stunning countryside and really firendly people.
