We were on a bus from Guayaquil to Banos and two guys, who thought we were asleep, tried to pull our daybags from under our seats. Our bags were wrapped around our legs so we were okay but travelling with my small daybag on my lap would have avoided the situation altogether.
We heard lots stories of people having bags stolen from under their seats on bus journies/ at bus terminals.

I have also heard that this is a growing probelm in Colombia. When in San Gil I heard from hostel owner of tablets being stolen from day sack left under seats or from the luggage shelf above seats. As Hector suggests put day sack on lap and then seat belt over it
