Africa is perhaps Objective's favourite continent. The people are so friendly and there is a huge diversity of cultures and landscapes. Key safety concerns would be: 

  • Road traffic accidents; as a generalisation we strongly advice against driving or being driven at night.
  • Disease. Don't get Malaria. Avoid it by covering up (esp dawn and dusk), using insect repellant, sleeping under mozzies nets & take the correct prophylaxis. Please remember If you have flu like symptons, assume you have malaria and go to hospital immediately.  
  • Crime. Avoid being mugged in high threat cities such as Lagos, Nairobi & Johannesburg

Was in Lilongwe recently and just to say it definitely pays to 'hire' a taxi driver for the day to get around. If you're in the city - negotiate a price for the day rather than each trip and don't worry about wait time - the drivers are quite happy to wait as long as you want. They also come in handy for recommending some great local places to eat and helping with the bartering! The Malawians are very proud and more than happy to help - not everyone is always going to try and rip you off.
