Australia | Sydney - recommendations
For cheap hostels, try mad monkey Potts point. It's one of the best hostels for value. £20 a night is the cheapest in Sydney, but the staff make fresh dinners every night and there's a good atmosphere it's a proper backpackers hostel.
If you want somewhere a little nicer, try Wake Up Central, Nomads or YHA Central which has a rooftop pool. They're all around £35 a night.
For going out, Scary Canary, Helm and Bungalow 8 are my favourites and they're all within walking distance of central, or you can get the tram to circular quay. For cheap drinks try Maloneys for $10 beer jugs in happy hour or the Shark hotel which is $5 schooners and $10 cocktails all day.
For food go to El Camino for taco Tuesday for $2 dollar tacos. Go to Chambers Fine Coffee for nice breakfast.
Bondi Tony's in Bondi Junction do amazing burgers.
In Manly, try the Italian restaurant on the Main Street, they do a deal of Pizza and glass of wine for $15.
Things to do:
Opera House, Blue Mountains tour, Hunter Valley excursions, Bondi beach, Manly beach (very good), Bondi-Coogee coastal walk, open air cinemas, museums...

Argentina | Travel Tips
Buses are good but for some journeys worth booking internal flights. Very cheap and easy to use. BusBud is a good app for checking bus times but cheaper to buy tickets at the Bus Station. Uber is very good here but if you have a debit card you will have to use cash as it won't accept payment (credit card is fine). Get a Sube card which works for most public transport in Argentina (not Cordoba weirdly).

Argentina | Money Tips
You need to create a Western Union account for money withdrawal. Super easy to do and then send the money to yourself to collect at local branch. If in doubt ask someone at hostel to help. Make sure you bring your passport with you as they need identification. Cambio (black market) has been a little broken since new President so you will get a worst rate than through Western Union. Chile | Some Tips and Recommendations
I arrived in Santiago in December. Very friendly city but it is quite expensive compared to other South American cities and as a nation is consistently more expensive (a beer is 3/4 quid, pizza 10 pound, budget hostel £10 a night). Can find some amazing deals (5L of wine for £3) but need to search. I stayed in Hostal Provedincia, good central hostel where you meet lots of people. Make sure to get a Bip card for the metro (bit of a pain to get but well worth it). Be a little wary on a night out but if you follow the advice of your hostel you will be fine. ATM's are very easy to use but bear in mind you will be charged 8,500 pesos each time you use so withdraw large amounts. Some ATM's didn't work for me so be prepared to have to go to another one. Can pay some hostels in Dollars but would recommend getting Pesos as they tend not to accept dollars or give you a bad rate.

Sri Lanka | Trains
Take the trains and buses around Sri Lanka, it's the cheapest and best way to get around. Especially the train from Kandy to ella, this is the most beautiful train ride! It's a long way - 7 hours, but the time flies. Be weary of food being sold on the trains, especially if you’ve just arrived and not used to the local cuisine yet. If you want a guaranteed seat you need to book online in advance, or you can wait and book a seat on the platform but this will be more expensive. The second and third class carriages which you can book night before / on the day can be very busy and you will most likely be standing for part of the journey but it’s good atmosphere and really fun chatting to the locals / fellow travellers. We did this and had a great time!

Sri Lanka | Leeches
In and around Ella there are loads of trekking opportunities but there are leeches lurking in the long grass. Wear long trousers and socks. Also, we were advised to put hand sanitizer and / or antiseptic spray on our shoes, socks and ankles. This worked well for us and we came back leech free! If you do find a leech has clung on to you, put salt on it to help remove it.

Sri Lanka | SIM cards
Upon arrival I'd recommend buying a local SIM card at the airport. We paid $9/ month for 30gb data and unlimited local calls and texts. Most places have wifi but it is often pretty bad and it's helpful having a local sim to call tuk tuk drivers / hostels. Also useful to have 3G for maps when you are out and about.

Colombia | Playa blanca No Go and book your own taxis
My friends and I had looked at beaches to go to for a couple days and heard playa Blanca was really nice. We booked a hostel on booking.com (first mistake) then asked our hostel receptionist to book us a taxi to our hostel. The guy whatsapped someone that were guessing he knew as an unlicensed taxi (non yellow taxi) turned up. We thought it was okay as the hotel booked it for us - this happened at another place we were at but we were okay as we were in a big group - just book your own taxis - YELLOW TAXIS ONLY as their registered and no one ever gets robbed in them.

Colombia - Cartegna | Extortion demand
I have had reported of 4 Gap year travellers being threatened by a gang in bar in Cartegna to hand over money. It seems some or all of them were escorted to an ATM. If this happens just comply. However this just reinforces our teaching just to take out cash when going out in bars and restaurants. Always ask the hostel owners as to where the high crime spots are.

Alright for a night or two. Not masses to see. Good nightlife but have to be careful. The Masaya is a nice hostel as is the Cranking Croc which is near the main plaza and is run by an Aussie.
The Gold Museum is a must which is also close to the main Plaza. Be aware of corrupt working in tandem with drug dealers.

India | Trains by Billy Lowther
Trains are a great way to get around India, south India especially. The system is a bit odd and confusing. The best options are apps called Ixigo, IRTC and make my trip to book trains however often there are no seats left and you get waitlisted - this is what happened to us most of the time. Alternatively you can book trains through travel agents on streets or the final way is to turn up to the station on the day or day before and buy a ticket. Although the app says it's full they never actually are !

Sri lanka | Colombo scam
Walking past the hospital a well dressed man came rushing up to us asking if we spoke English, when we said yes he told us his daughter was having an asthma attack in school and had to use some expensive medicine as inhalers did not work, then showed us a piece of paper that looked like a percription and told us that his card was not working in the atm and would it be possible to borrow the money and give it back to us later, we exchanged numbers but later he never picked up or replied to any messages. He was dressed like a businessman in a suit and nice shoes so we thought he was genuine.

Myanmar | Hostels in Ngapali
The only hostel I coudl find in Ngapali with a dormitory was the We stay @Chillax House. Its opposite the smart Sandoway resort. Bunk bed in dorm for $13, private rooms for around $30. Guesthourse May 18 also looked good and clean but no dorm and rooms for $30. Another option is the Family Resort 1 & 2 - on the northern beach (much nicer than main beach) north of Lin tha village. The Family Resort 2 is cheaper, on the road but has rooms for $22 & v close bike ride to Family Resort 1 which is on the beach & has more expensive rooms + restaurant. email; azfamilyguesthouse@gmail.com

Myanmar | Train from Kalaw to Inle Lake
The train from Kalaw to Shwe Nyaung (for Inle Lake) is a cheap, slow and wonderful way to travel. The train is old, never does more that 40 mph and provides a great way to see everyday Burmsee life. In Upper class, which has huge comfortable swivel seats, the journey costs about $ 0.80 and will take about 3 to 3.5 hours.

On hostel world type in ' Kintimini' one hostel appears. My review will be on their somewhere. Lovely family hostel - take taxi from UBUD or somewhere afternoon before. Husband and wife, he will take you up the volcano the following morning at 3am. He does a back route so you wont see all the tourists. If you ask him to book your Gili T for the following day he organises your boat and gives you dicount. HIGHLY recommend.

Full Moon Party is so fun but worth knowing how to keep safe as it can be very full on. In order to make sure you are staying in the best hostel (this matters as its where you will ‘pre’ and often you go to the party with people you have met in the hostel) it's best to pick a date and book the hostel about 2/3months in advance as the best ones go quickly.

Bolivia | General Lessons from South America
- Only pay online in advance for activities if you really need to, prices are always a rip off
- Hosteworld is excellent for checking and booking hostels, always check the reviews first
- Go to the bus station in person to check times and prices and ask to see the bus facilities
- Haggle on everything you can and aim for three quarters, especially if you're in a big group
- As a general rule, book hostels which include free breakfast, you can stock up for lunch too

Bolivia | Potosà Club Scam
In Potosí in Bolvia, we were befriended by a Bolivian lady working in our hostel who promised to take us to the best local club for the Independence Day celebrations; against my better judgement, our group agreed a price and took a taxi, which went to a very sketchy part of town where the taxi was surrounded by bouncers and we were told we couldn't have our money back when we said we didn't want to enter the club, which was empty and dangerous - in such situations, forget about the money and don't get out of the taxi.

i defintley advise going to Rurrenebaque to see the jungle but try if you can to go in the high season where you will have more chance of seeing animals on Las Pampas trip. However do not take the bus there if you are strapped for cash. One of the tunnels was shut so we had to go along death road for it a bit while passsing big trucks and 90 metre drops. Great hotel in Labuan Bajo (Komodo). Slightly more expensive than the hostels in the area but it is in a quiet part of town, about a 10 min walk up a hill (new-layed road) so still able to walk into the main area for food etc. Worth it for the view! I really recommend staying at Pousada Ecoverde in Cuiaba and then going with Eco Verde tours into the Panatanal. The hostel is close to the centre, many of the staff there speak English and its very well run.

India | Metro - Arrival Delhi Airport to city centre
The new metro is a very good way of getting into the city centre. Its safe, not crowded, efficient and clean. From the International airport it costs Rupees 120 ( £1.50/ $ 2.30) to New Delhi station - next to the New Delhi railway station. Posted by Charlie McGrath

Argentina | Arrival at Buenos Aires International Airport
I found a relatively cheap but safe way of getting to your hostel. It was with a company called Manuel Tienda Leon. You will find them immediately on the left as you enter the public area of the airport following baggage collection. Cost Peso 55 - about US$13.

Romania | Bucharest Airport Bus scam
Last May I went walking in Romania, on arrival at Bucharest OTP airport we met a con artist within 5 minutes of clearing baggage. He tried to claim he was a registered bus driver providing lift to local hotel when no such service existed at that time of night. We were suspicious so checked with the Information Desk, our concern was proved right.
